Loch Lochy

Loch Lochy is a large freshwater loch in the Highland region of Scotland. It lies along the Great Glen, sixteen kilometres southwest of Loch Ness. The loch stretches over fifteen kilometres in length with an average width of about one kilometre. Its mean depth reaches seventy metres, making it the fourth-deepest loch in Scotland. The River Lochy flows from its southwestern end while the Caledonian Canal connects its northeastern end to Loch Oich. The loch should not be confused with Loch Loch, which lies further east. The loch has been the scene of notable historical events. In July 1544, the Battle of the Shirts took place at its northern end near Laggan between Clan Donald and Clan Fraser. In September 1665, the Stand-off at the Fords of Arkaig ended a 360-year feud between the Camerons and the Chattan Confederation. This event occurred at Achnacarry, on the isthmus between Loch Lochy and Loch Arkaig. Folklore from the area speaks of a supernatural being called the River Horse, said to emerge from the loch and assume a horse’s shape. Another tradition mentions the River Bull, described as a gentle creature that would emerge from the loch into the pasture of cows. Visitors to Loch Lochy find a tranquil setting surrounded by rolling Highland hills. The loch’s deep, clear waters reflect the landscape, offering peaceful views along its length. The Caledonian Canal provides a scenic waterway linking Loch Lochy to other lochs in the Great Glen.
