Guy's Hospital

Guy’s Hospital stands in the London Borough of Southwark, founded in 1721 by Thomas Guy on land granted for a peppercorn rent. The original buildings formed a courtyard on St Thomas Street, with the hall on the east side and the chapel, Matron’s House and Surgeon’s House on the west. A bequest of £180,000 in 1829 allowed the hospital to expand southwards, creating two inner quadrangles divided by a cloister later dedicated to those lost in the First World War. Lord Nuffield, long-serving chairman and benefactor, is commemorated by a statue in the north-side quadrangle. The 34-storey Tower Wing, completed in 1974, was once the world’s tallest hospital building and remains one of the tallest in London. The hospital’s history includes notable episodes such as the Guy’s Hospital dispute of 1879–80, when matron Margaret Burt clashed with medical staff over nursing authority. Florence Nightingale supported trained matrons having full control, and Burt ultimately resigned. Later, the Wolfson Centre for Age-Related Diseases opened in 2004, dedicated to conditions like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. A new cancer centre followed in 2016, designed by Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners, while a twin operating theatre was installed in 2023. The site also houses medical services in connected wings east of Great Maze Pond. Visitors find the Tower Wing rising 148.65 metres above the campus, its roof now topped by a light sculpture. The original courtyard and chapel still stand near St Thomas Street, with the marble tomb of Thomas Guy inside. The north quadrangle features the statue of Lord Nuffield, and the cloister links the care wards and governors’ Burfoot Court Room. To the west of Great Maze Pond lies Guy’s Campus, part of King’s College London. The Cancer Centre sits just south of the main cluster, while the Wolfson Centre focuses on research into age-related diseases.
