Buchan Ness Lighthouse

Buchan Ness Lighthouse stands on a rugged headland in Boddam, Aberdeenshire, marking the point where the North Sea meets the open ocean. The granite tower rises 36 metres above the cliffs, its white light flashing every five seconds to guide ships up to 52 kilometres away. For centuries the Ness served as a departure point for whaling and trading voyages to distant ports like Archangel and Spitsbergen. Many vessels were lost in storms before the lighthouse was built, prompting local petitions in 1819. Robert Stevenson, engineer to the Northern Lighthouse Board, chose the site and supervised its construction, completed in 1824. The lighthouse was first lit in 1827 and painted with a distinctive red band in 1907 to help mariners fix their position. A foghorn known locally as the Boddam Coo or Boddam Bear sounded for decades until it was switched off in 2000. The tower’s powerful optic now relies on modern lamps while retaining its historic character. Nearby, the ruins of Buchanness Lodge recall an Italianate villa built in 1840 for Lord Aberdeen by architect John Smith. The villa’s pediment bears the motto procul negotiis beatis, roughly ‘happy the man who stays from business’. Visitors approach along coastal paths that follow the cliff tops above crashing waves. The lighthouse grounds offer sweeping views eastward across the North Sea and north to the Scottish coast. The red stripe on the tower stands out against the grey granite and the heather-covered headland. The remains of Buchanness Lodge lie close by, its pediment inscription still legible above the crumbling walls. The site combines maritime history with wild coastal scenery, a quiet reminder of Scotland’s seafaring past.
