St James's Church

St James’s Church stands in Bermondsey, a district of south London. James Savage designed the building in the early 19th century for a new parish created by the Church Building Acts. Completed in 1829 and consecrated soon after, it was separated from the ancient parish of St Mary Magdalene’s Bermondsey in 1840. The church became a Grade II* listed building in 1949, placing it among the nation’s most significant historic structures. Its stone spire was modelled on Sir Christopher Wren’s St Stephen Walbrook and needed a special Act of Parliament in 1831 to raise extra money. The churchyard once held burials until 1855, after which it served as a communal drying ground. The church’s architecture and history make it worth the journey.
