Faulds Brow

Faulds Brow is a modest rise in the English Lake District, just northwest of Caldbeck in Cumbria. It appears in A. Wainwright’s book *The Outlying Fells of Lakeland* as one of the fells he describes. The summit stands only 344 metres above sea level, little higher than the surrounding land. A short walk from a main road to the south brings visitors to the top with little effort. From there, wide views stretch to High Pike in the south and across the Solway Firth to Scotland in the north. Wainwright suggests an anticlockwise circuit starting from Caldbeck as the best way to make the walk worthwhile. The route mostly follows minor roads and quiet lanes. The fell itself is covered mainly in heather, giving it a purple hue in late summer. Just east of the summit lies a small abandoned quarry, a relic of past industry. Two broadcasting antennas stand prominently to the north, just beyond the Lake District National Park boundary. At the top, visitors find open ground with sweeping views in every direction. Heather carpets the slopes, and the remains of the quarry add a touch of ruggedness. The antennas mark the edge of the national park, visible against the skyline. The route from Caldbeck passes through farmland and quiet countryside before climbing gently to the summit. The contrast between the modest height and the grand views makes the short walk rewarding.
