Bahrenfeld

Bahrenfeld lies in the western part of Hamburg, within the Altona district. It was once a separate village and joined the city of Altona in 1890. The quarter mixes homes with businesses and stretches across 10.9 square kilometres. DESY, a well-known particle physics centre, has parts of its site here. The area also holds the Barclays Arena and a harness racing track. The quarter has a long history. The first written mention dates from 1256. During the 19th century it became part of Altona, and in 1938 it was brought into Hamburg under the Greater Hamburg Act. The Altona Main Cemetery nearby reflects the district’s tradition of religious freedom, with Jewish, Mennonite and Lutheran burial grounds. Visitors find the Altona Volkspark, a large green space opened in 1920. The smaller Bonnepark sits beside major roads. The Lichthof Theatre stages performances in a converted building. Sports fans can watch harness racing or visit the Barclays Arena and Volksparkstadion. The quarter is served by two railway stations on the city train network.
