King's Hall

The King’s Hall was an entertainment venue in Aberystwyth, Wales. Built in 1934 in the Art Deco style by L. G. Mouchel and Partners, it replaced the former Waterloo Hydro Hotel destroyed by fire in 1919. The building stood on the seafront, a prominent landmark for decades. It was demolished in 1989 after years of use. Its design reflected the bold lines and geometric shapes typical of the period. The venue drew large crowds for concerts and films. The ground-floor dancehall seated 1,280 people for bands and performances. On the first floor a cinema held 280 seats for film screenings. Below, Palm Court housed amusement machines and dodgems. Over the years top acts such as Led Zeppelin, Slade, Free and The Rolling Stones played there. Visitors found a lively programme of music and cinema. The rooftop garden offered views across Cardigan Bay. Inside, the dancehall’s polished floor echoed with bands from the 1960s and 1970s. The cinema’s tiered seats filled for Saturday matinees. Palm Court buzzed with the clatter of arcade games. Though gone, the hall remains part of the town’s entertainment history.
