Regent's Park tube station

Regent’s Park station stands in the City of Westminster, 175 metres south of Regent’s Park itself. It sits on the Bakerloo line between Baker Street and Oxford Circus, with its lift entrance in Park Crescent off Marylebone Road. The station opened in 1906 despite not being part of the original plan, added later after permission was granted. In 1983 London Transport proposed closing it because the lifts were too old, but the Greater London Council prevented this. The ticket hall lies beneath a garden and required large metal beams to stop the ground from sinking. Regent’s Park station is the second-least used in Zone 1, with 3.5 million entries or exits in 2015. It has no surface building, only a subway and a staircase of 96 steps. The lifts were refurbished between 2006 and 2007 to keep the station running. Great Portland Street station lies a short walk to the east, offering changes to the Circle, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan lines, though separate fares apply. Nearby attractions include Regent’s Park, Madame Tussauds, the Royal Academy of Music and the Royal College of Physicians. Blue plaques mark former homes of H.G. Wells, Elizabeth Bowen and Ralph Vaughan Williams along nearby streets. The station’s quiet location makes it a useful starting point for walks through Marylebone and towards Harley Street.
