Galtjoch

The Galtjoch is a mountain in the Lechtaler Alps, standing at 2 109 metres above sea level in the Austrian state of Tirol. It belongs to the Liegfeist group and is linked by a two-kilometre ridge to the Knittelkarspitze. To the north the Rainberg and to the east the Abendspitze form lower summits nearby. Kelmen in the south and Rinnen bei Berwang in the east are the main villages at the foot of the mountain. The summit can be reached without difficulty from Rinnen along forest tracks and clearly marked paths that pass the Ehenbichler Alm at 1 694 metres. From the west the Reuttener Höhenweg provides another route up. In winter the Galtjoch attracts skiers and snowshoe hikers because the climb is straightforward and avalanche risk is low. On the slopes hikers find open alpine meadows and views across the Lechtal. The Ehenbichler Alm offers food and rest during the summer months. The ridge walk to the Knittelkarspitze rewards walkers with wide panoramas of the surrounding peaks.
