Broadgate

Broadgate is a large office and retail estate in the City of London. It covers 32 acres beside and above the railway approaches into Liverpool Street station. The estate sits on the site of the old Broad Street station, which closed in 1986. Its borders are Bishopsgate to the east, Sun Street and Appold Street to the north, Wilson Street to the west and Eldon Street to the south. Broadgate Circle and Exchange Square lie within the estate. The estate is worth the journey for its scale and design. It was the largest office development in London until Canary Wharf appeared in the early 1990s. Exchange House spans the railway tracks with only 5% of its footprint touching the ground. The Broadgate Art Trail shows sixteen artworks across the 32-acre plot. Works include Rush Hour by George Segal and Fulcrum by Richard Serra. The estate also hosts a twice-monthly farmers’ market and a Christmas market in winter. A visitor finds modern office towers and wide pedestrian paths. Broadgate Tower stands 538 feet tall over the railway tracks. Exchange House, completed in 1990, stretches above the tracks in a single span. The headquarters of UBS sits at 5 Broadgate, a low steel-clad building. Broadgate Circle and Exchange Square offer open spaces for events and art. The surroundings mix glass and steel with public art and seasonal markets.
