Arch of Remembrance

The Arch of Remembrance stands in Victoria Park, Leicester, a 35-hectare public park south-east of the city centre. It is a First World War memorial designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, one of Britain’s leading architects of the early 20th century. The committee formed in 1919 chose Victoria Park as the site after considering several locations. Lutyens first proposed a tree cathedral with a cenotaph and Stone of Remembrance, but rising costs led to a simpler design. By 1923 the committee asked him to create a memorial arch instead. The final structure is a single Portland stone arch with four legs, 21 metres tall, topped by a large dome set back from the edge. The arch is one of Lutyens’s largest war memorials and dominates the park and surrounding area. Its main arches are aligned so the sun shines through them at sunrise on Armistice Day each year. The inside features a decorative coffered ceiling, and the legs support painted stone flags representing each of the British armed forces and the Merchant Navy. Decorative iron railings surround the structure, with later additions including gates at the University Road and London Road entrances. The arch was unveiled in 1925 by two local widows in front of a large crowd that included Lutyens himself. Visitors find a grand stone arch rising above Victoria Park’s paths and open lawns. The four arched openings frame views across the park and towards the city. The central dome and coffered ceiling inside the arch add to its imposing presence. The painted flags on the legs recall the service of different branches of the armed forces. The memorial’s alignment with the sun on 11 November creates a moment of reflection each year. The surrounding park, once a racetrack, offers space for quiet walks among mature trees and open ground.
