A76 road

The A76 is a main trunk road cutting across south-west Scotland. It begins at Kilmarnock in East Ayrshire and keeps to the edge of small towns like Hurlford and Mauchline before climbing through mining villages such as Auchinleck and Cumnock. After New Cumnock it enters Dumfries and Galloway, passing Kirkconnel and Sanquhar where the road climbs into the hills. The route follows the River Nith for most of its length, threading the broad Nithsdale valley that once carried drovers and their cattle to market. The valley’s gentle slopes and open farmland give way to moorland near Mennock and Enterkinfoot where the road narrows. Thornhill and Closeburn sit just off the line, their grey stone houses gathered round old kirks. Beyond Kirkpatrick the road curves past Auldgirth’s riverside park and Holywood’s scattered farms before ending in Dumfries. Travellers see changing landscapes in a single journey: arable fields, wooded riverbanks, heather moors and finally the wide streets of the county town.
