A121 road

The A121 is a road in England that links Waltham Cross with Woodford Wells. It runs through the densest part of Epping Forest for much of its length. The road passes settlements such as Waltham Abbey, Loughton and Buckhurst Hill. It follows the route of an old turnpike south of the Wake Arms Roundabout. Two bypasses were built around steep hills near Lower Road in Loughton and North End on the Loughton–Buckhurst Hill boundary. The road meets the M25 motorway at Junction 26, known as the Waltham Abbey Interchange. This junction provides a key link between the A121 and the orbital motorway. The A121’s route through Epping Forest means it carries traffic through one of England’s most important ancient woodlands. The forest’s dense canopy and varied wildlife make the drive a scenic one. Drivers on the A121 pass through quiet villages and open woodland. The road’s alignment avoids the steepest slopes by using bypasses built in the past. Woodredon and Goldings Hills lie close to the route, offering glimpses of the forest’s rolling terrain. The road’s history as a turnpike is still visible in sections of its alignment. The journey connects busy towns with the peaceful heart of Epping Forest.
