Brent Cross tube station

Brent Cross is a London Underground station on Highfield Avenue in the Golders Green area of north-west London. It stands between Hendon Central and Golders Green stations on the Edgware branch of the Northern line. The station is a Grade II listed building and lies in London fare zone 3. Brent Cross shopping centre sits halfway between this station and Hendon Central. Two wide bridges over Highfield Avenue still show where extra tracks once allowed fast trains to overtake slower ones. The station opened on 19 November 1923 as Brent, named after the nearby river. It was designed by architect Stanley Heaps and built through rural land to reach Edgware. Before the First World War the station had been planned under the name Woodstock. In 1976 it was renamed Brent Cross to match the new shopping centre. Extra passing loops added soon after opening were removed in the 1930s. A turning circle for buses is proposed outside the tube station. Several London Buses, both day and night services, already stop here. A light railway scheme once suggested a rapid transit line through Brent Cross that would end at this station. The booking hall and platforms from 1922 still appear in transport archives.
