The Linn

The Linn is a waterfall on the River Lossie in Moray, eastern Scotland. The Scots word ‘linn’ describes a plunge pool or a confined stretch of fast water, and here the river drops sharply over a rocky lip into a deep basin. The setting is quiet farmland, with the Lossie cutting a green valley through gentle slopes. The falls are part of Scotland’s wider pattern of Highland waterfalls, where steep terrain and heavy rain create many drops. Though not the tallest single drop in the country, the Linn is a recognised local landmark and a good example of how ‘linn’ is used in place names. Its modest height still makes a clear feature on the river. Visitors find a short path leading to viewpoints above and beside the pool. The water rushes over the lip and swirls in the basin below, especially after rain. The surrounding fields and woodland give a peaceful backdrop, with only the sound of the fall breaking the quiet.
