Landestheater Tübingen
The Landestheater Tübingen is a publicly funded theatre in Baden-Württemberg. It stages its own productions and guest performances, including some in foreign languages. The theatre also runs a children’s and youth division and takes shows beyond its walls, with more than a quarter of its over 900 annual performances held outside. The theatre’s origins lie in the immediate postwar years. In 1945 a local play group began performing in a multipurpose room in a museum, later joined by the nearby city of Reutlingen. Financial support from the state allowed regular productions to start in the early 1950s. By the 1960s the cramped museum venue could no longer meet the theatre’s needs, and plans for a new building stalled. In 1975 the theatre found a disused chair factory and converted it into its permanent home. Today the converted factory houses two performance spaces. The Great Hall opened in 1979 with Schiller’s ‘Die Räuber’. The smaller studio space hosts the Young LTT, which was founded in 1984 and is directed by Michael Miensopust. Productions range from classics like Hamlet to modern works, and the theatre continues to tour across the region.
