Schloss Holzhammer
Schloss Holzhammer stands in the village of the same name, a short distance from Schnaittenbach in the Upper Palatinate. It began as an ironworks beside the Ehenbach, where water power drove the hammers that shaped iron. The building still shows the heavy stone walls and wide roof of a former hammer mill. A protected monument, it carries the marks of many centuries of industry and ownership. The site includes not only the main house but also the remains of the late medieval and early modern ironworks. The surrounding meadows and woodland recall the days when charcoal from the forests fed the furnaces. The place matters because it carries the story of iron in Bavaria. In 1366 Pfalzgraf Rupprecht the Elder granted the first hammer charter, giving the owners the right to run an ironworks and administer justice. For two hundred years the Kastner family shaped the works, built an iron-trading company, and founded a charity that fed fifty-four poor citizens of Amberg for centuries. Even after the arrival of coke-fired blast furnaces in 1861, Holzhammer kept working until 1863, when the last iron plates were cast. The site shows how small works once powered an entire region. Visitors find a solid stone house with plain, rectangular windows and a steep roof. Inside, some rooms still show the original beams and iron fittings. Outside, the Ehenbach runs close by, and the old millrace can still be traced. The surrounding village has a quiet farmyard feel, with barns and cottages grouped around the works. From the gate a path leads to the water, where the sound of the stream replaces the noise of the hammers. The scene is peaceful now, but the walls still echo the industry that once shaped this corner of Bavaria.
