St Edith's Church, Eaton-under-Heywood

St Edith’s Church stands on the lower slopes of Wenlock Edge in the village of Eaton-under-Heywood, Shropshire. It is an active Anglican parish church dedicated to Saint Edith of Wilton. The church is part of the deanery of Condover, the archdeaconry of Ludlow, and the diocese of Hereford. Its benefice is linked with that of St Andrew in nearby Hope Bowdler. The building is listed at Grade I on the National Heritage List for England. The church’s nave dates from the 12th century, with the tower and chancel added in the early 13th century. Later alterations were made in the 14th and 15th centuries, and the church was restored in 1869 by W. J. Hopkins. The exterior is built of stone rubble with ashlar dressings and features a tiled roof topped with a cross finial. The tower, rising from the south side, has three stages with lancet windows and bell openings under round arches. Inside, the nave roof is from the 15th century, while the chancel roof, nearly flat and more ornate, dates from about 1600. The Norman font has a 19th-century cover, and the pulpit is carved with tracery and dated 1670. Stained glass includes work by Frederick Preedy and windows by Done and Davies. The churchyard holds a Grade II-listed sundial from 1721 and the war grave of a Royal Artillery soldier from World War II.
