Rendlesham Forest incident

Rendlesham Forest lies in Suffolk, eight kilometres east of Ipswich, a patchwork of conifer plantations, broadleaf belts and wetland edges owned by the Forestry Commission. It stretches east from the runway of the former RAF Woodbridge, a United States Air Force base in the late 20th century under Colonel Ted Conrad, with Lieutenant Colonel Charles I. Halt as his deputy. The forest begins just 0.5 kilometres beyond the East Gate, where security patrols first saw unexplained lights appear to drop into the trees on 26 December 1980. The events became Britain’s most famous UFO case, often compared to America’s Roswell incident. USAF personnel including Sergeant Jim Penniston described a glowing, metallic object that moved through the trees while nearby farm animals became agitated. On the morning after, a small clearing showed three shallow depressions, burn marks and broken branches, photographed by Georgina Bruni. Lieutenant Colonel Halt later recorded radiation readings in the same triangle of depressions using a standard U.S. military meter. Visitors walk the forest paths where the sightings occurred, passing the farmer’s field at Capel Green where further lights were noted. A line of sight runs east from the clearing to Orford Ness Lighthouse, eight kilometres away, whose flashing beam matches the lights described by witnesses. The forest’s quiet rides and wetland pools offer few distractions, letting walkers retrace the steps of the patrols who once followed imagined beams across the heath.
