Christ Church, Woking

Christ Church stands in Woking, a town in Surrey. It belongs to the Diocese of Guildford and occupies a site once used by an iron building called the Iron Room. That temporary hall seated about four hundred people before a permanent church was planned. The project began after land from the London Necropolis Railway became available in the 1870s. The first stone was laid by the Duchess of Albany in 1887. The church’s long history shows how Woking’s population grew quickly in the 1870s. Services moved from a shop back room to the Iron Room, which soon proved too small. Funds of between four and five thousand pounds were raised to build the new church. Construction started in 1887 and the first service took place on New Year’s Day 1889. The transepts and morning chapel were finished only in 1908. Inside, visitors find a café and bookshop added in recent years. The building itself has a nave, transepts and a morning chapel completed late in the 19th century. The surroundings include the burial ground set aside when the church was first planned. Recent renovation work began in August 2026 to expand and restore the building.
