Evangelisches Bethaus Obertraun

The Evangelical Bethaus in Obertraun stands in the Salzkammergut village of Obertraun, Upper Austria, as a simple preaching station linked to the parish church in Hallstatt. It is one of the few surviving evangelical places of worship in the region, where the Reformation took hold around 1550 but was driven underground by the Counter-Reformation from 1600. After Emperor Joseph II issued his Tolerance Patent in 1781, evangelicals in Hallstatt built a small Tolerance Bethaus in 1785, but Obertraun residents had to hold services in private homes or cross the Hallstättersee by boat to reach it. The present building began life in 1774 as a state Trivialschule, later enlarged with a gift of 4,500 Austrian gulden from Princess Hohenzollern-Hechingen for an evangelical primary school. In 1906 the school was converted into a plain Bethaus and dedicated as a place of worship. Though it carries no outward sign of a church, the interior is arranged for services and has been fully restored in 2014. The community itself is unusual: about half of Obertraun’s population belongs to the Protestant church, and the wider district of Bad Ischl contains seven evangelical churches, a density found in few other Austrian areas. Inside, the Bethaus is modest and unadorned, its whitewashed walls and wooden pews creating a quiet space for prayer and song. The building is one of the oldest in the village and still serves as a centre for the local congregation. Outside, the surrounding houses and the distant peaks of the Dachstein massif frame the scene, linking the small sanctuary to the landscape of the Salzkammergut.
