Kleines Theater Berlin-Mitte

The Kleine Theater Berlin-Mitte is a touring theatre company based in Berlin-Mitte. It was founded in 1968 by theatre scholar Hansjörg Schneider, his wife Siggi Brennemann—a master gilder—and dancer Brigitte Schneider-Wulkow. For more than two decades it performed in rooms on Klosterstraße for school beginners, teenagers and adults. After the House of Young Talent closed in 1991 the company moved first to the House of Children on Parkaue and then to the adult education centre in Berlin-Mitte. The theatre is now an established touring company whose productions are seen across Berlin and beyond. Its repertoire ranges from children’s revues and literary-musical evenings to classics by Goethe, Shakespeare and Wilde. Among the works it has staged are Erich Kästner’s Emil and the Detectives, Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap and Curt Goetz’s The Lamp-Shade. The ensemble also presents programmes such as Hoppla, We’re Alive! – a 1920s revue—and Abgründe, an absurdist evening featuring plays by George Tabori, Sławomir Mrożek and Woody Allen. The company’s main rehearsal and performance base is the VHS City in Linienstraße 162. It regularly tours to venues such as the Theatre on Parkaue in Berlin, the König Albert Theatre in Bad Elster and St Jakobi Kulturkirche in Stralsund. Every spring it travels to Habnith in Franconia and each autumn it performs along the Saxon Wine Route. The twelve-strong ensemble is led by Siggi Brennemann and draws members from varied backgrounds, many of whom have later worked in film and television.
