Erinnerungsstätte Matthias Erzberger

The Erinnerungsstätte Matthias Erzberger stands in Buttenhausen, a village in the town of Münsingen in the Tübingen region. It occupies the house where the politician Matthias Erzberger was born in the late 19th century. The building was restored and converted into a museum by the city of Münsingen with support from several foundations and the local district. The exhibition was designed by the Haus der Geschichte Baden-Württemberg and the Stuttgart studio Atelier Brückner. Christoph Palmer, a former state minister, is recognised as the driving force behind the creation of the site. The museum presents eleven themed sections that trace Erzberger’s life and political career. Original objects and staged rooms bring to life the struggles and achievements of this centre politician. Special events in 2011 and 2021 marked the 90th and 100th anniversaries of his death. A guide book and a classroom resource accompany the permanent display. The Geschichtsverein Münsingen organises tours and oversees the site. Visitors walk through the rooms of Erzberger’s birthplace, each fitted with displays that recreate moments from his public and private life. The exhibition shows how his actions shaped the early years of German democracy. The village of Buttenhausen, surrounded by the Swabian Alb landscape, adds a quiet setting to the visit.
