Landesklinikum Melk
The Landesklinikum Melk stands on a rise in the eastern part of the town, its large buildings forming a protected complex. The oldest section, built between 1896 and 1899, is a two-storey structure with a central tower and a slate roof. A later block from 1909–11, designed by architects Theiss and Jaksch, rises three storeys under another high roof. Over the decades further wings were added, the most recent completed in 2012 to plans by Maurer & Partner ZT GmbH. Inside the hospital treats about 170 inpatients and handles roughly 10,000 admissions each year. Five main departments cover anaesthetics, surgery, gynaecology, internal medicine and a special unit for people with COPD. Seven outpatient clinics provide follow-up care, including a dedicated service for patients with intellectual disabilities. During the COVID-19 outbreak the site became a regional centre for coronavirus cases, working closely with the University Hospital at St Pölten. The protected chapel of the Holy Trinity, built in 1903, occupies a quiet corner of the old building. Its flat ceiling and vaulted sanctuary contain original glass and furnishings from the early 1900s. A historicist altar shows kneeling angels and a relief of God the Father, while side niches hold statues of Saint Joseph and the Virgin. After renovation in 2013–14 the chapel was rededicated by the Interior Minister Johanna Mikl-Leitner, who also acted as sponsor of the new bell.
