Kalvarienbergkirche und Kreuzweg
The Kalvarienbergkirche stands on a small hill in the town of Wels, Upper Austria. It is a Baroque Catholic church reached by a winding path lined with Stations of the Cross. The church was built in 1715–16 by Wolfgang Grinzenberger after a promise made during the Great Plague. The church was designed by Johann Michael Prunner, a master builder from Linz. Its foundations rest on an old Roman earthwork mound. Between 1977 and 1981 the building was fully restored to preserve its original features. The site remains a place of quiet reflection and local pilgrimage. Inside, visitors find a single nave with a small altar and side chapels. The Stations of the Cross lead up the slope, each marked by stone reliefs. From the hilltop there are views over Wels and the surrounding countryside. The churchyard is planted with mature trees and benches for rest.
