Loch Affric

Loch Affric is a freshwater loch in Glen Affric, Highland, about 40 kilometres southwest of Beauly. It lies within a national nature reserve known for rare wildlife and is a popular spot for trout fishing. The loch is surrounded by smaller lochs, including Loch Coulavie and Loch na Camaig at its southwestern end, and Loch Pollan Fearna to the northeast. The surrounding mountains include Sgùrr na Lapaich and An Tudair, with Corbetts like Aonach Shasuinn nearby. The area’s woodlands feature Scots pine, silver birch, and other pines, supporting diverse wildlife. The loch is home to brown trout, with anglers catching around 1,000 fish each season, averaging between 230 grams and 2.3 kilograms. Rare species such as pine marten, Scottish wildcat, otter, red squirrel, and golden eagle live in the reserve. Dragonflies like the azure hawker and white-faced darter are often seen near the shore. An annual duathlon takes place on the loch’s banks in May, and the loch has served as a backdrop for films like *Victoria & Abdul* and *Detective Pikachu*. Visitors find a quiet Highland loch with clear waters framed by ancient pine forests and rugged peaks. The shoreline offers peaceful walks through mixed woodland, while the deeper waters attract anglers. The reserve’s wildlife can be spotted along the paths, and the loch’s cinematic beauty is visible from viewpoints. The nearby mountains provide hiking routes with sweeping views over the glen. The area remains largely untouched, making it a retreat for nature lovers and film enthusiasts alike.
