Pecorama

Pecorama is a tourist attraction on the hillside above the village of Beer in Devon. It is owned by PECO, a model railway products manufacturer, and shares its site with the company’s workshops. The gardens, model railway exhibition and Beer Heights Light Railway form the main attractions. In 2026 the site reopened on selected days and for special events after a pause in daily operation. Children’s books about ‘Teddy Mac and the Railway Bears’ were written by Margaret Edmonds while the attraction was active. The Beer Heights Light Railway is a 1.6-kilometre minimum-gauge line opened in 1975 by Rev. W.V. Awdry. It was extended with a ‘Devil’s Gorge’ section that includes a cutting and tunnel, and a steep branch to Wildway Down. Deepwater Halt station reopened in 2015 after renovation. The line runs live steam locomotives designed on narrow-gauge principles and offers fine views along its route. Visitors find the Pecorama Gardens and the model railway exhibition alongside the railway. Special events such as gala days and gala weekends bring visiting locomotives like Finn MacCool from Northern Ireland. Pre-booked tours let guests explore PECO’s workshops and take part in modelling activities. The site’s hillside setting above Beer provides distant views of the coast.
