Blackhall Manor

Blackhall Manor stands in Paisley, Renfrewshire, as a sixteenth-century tower house in Scotland’s western central Lowlands. Parts of the building may be older, dating back to the twelfth century when a Norman knight first constructed a house on the site. It once belonged to the Stewart family and later the Shaw-Stewart family, who played a significant role in its history. The manor was designated a Category B listed building in 1971, recognising its architectural and historical importance. Its origins trace to Walter fitz Alan, a Norman knight who built the first house around 1160. The property passed to Sir John Stewart, an illegitimate son of King Robert III, in 1396. The manor’s history includes barony courts held there in the sixteenth century and its transformation into a farmhouse by the 1820s. In the 1840s, a new house was built nearby, and the old one was stripped of its roof to avoid taxes. The Shaw-Stewart family donated the decaying structure to Paisley Burgh in 1940. By 1978, it had become so unsafe that demolition was proposed, but it was fully restored between 1982 and 1983. Evidence suggests the tower was originally a hall house, enlarged in the sixteenth century with additional storeys, windows, and a new entrance. Visitors today find a restored tower house with a mix of architectural styles reflecting its long history. A fourteenth-century fireplace jamb remains, while the staircase tower’s windows differ from the rest of the building. The structure shows signs of its original hall-house design, expanded over centuries. The restoration preserved these features, offering a glimpse into its layered past. The manor stands as a quiet reminder of Scotland’s feudal and later agricultural history. Its survival and rebirth tell a story of adaptation and care.
