Netherdale

Netherdale is a sports complex in Galashiels, Scottish Borders, housing two stadiums side by side for rugby and football. The rugby ground belongs to Gala RFC, which moved there in 1912 from Mossilee, while the football ground is home to Gala Fairydean Rovers. The complex sits on Nether Road near the River Tweed, with the rugby pitch in the north-west corner and the football pitch in the south-west. Behind the main grounds lie undeveloped back pitches used for training and amateur games. Gala RFC built their first ground at Netherdale in 1912, and the football club arrived in 1929, later merging with Gala Rovers in 2013. The football stadium features a Category A listed grandstand designed by Peter Womersley in the brutalist style, opened in 1964. It is the largest stand in the Scottish Borders, holding 500 spectators, and was upgraded from a 'B' to an 'A' listing in 2013 for its architectural significance. The rugby stadium has a grandstand overlooking the pitch and the Eildon Hills, and its capacity reached around 4,000 during the Border Reivers era. Netherdale hosted a Rugby World Cup match in 1999 and rugby league internationals in 2014 and 2015. Visitors find two well-maintained pitches separated by a shared boundary, with the football ground’s stand offering a clear view of the action. The rugby ground’s stand provides a scenic backdrop of the Eildon Hills, adding to the atmosphere. The complex remains a hub for local sport, with the 3G Arena Netherdale serving as a community facility.
