St. Petri (Magdeburg)

St. Petri is a Catholic parish church in Magdeburg’s old town, standing on the left bank of the Elbe. It was first built around 1150 as a single-nave church for the fishing village of Frose, before Magdeburg’s city walls were extended to include it. The original west tower still survives from that early Romanesque structure. In 1213 the village and church were destroyed by imperial troops, then rebuilt on the same spot. The first written record of the church appears in 1258, noted by the chronicler Heinrich von Lammesspringe. The church was transformed in the 15th century into a three-aisled Gothic hall church under Archbishop Albrecht of Querfurt. Its five-sided apse, with five tall windows, is regarded as the finest in Magdeburg’s parish churches. Work continued into the late 15th century, leaving the old west tower standing slightly off-centre. After the Reformation began in 1524, an evangelical pastor was appointed and the first organ installed in 1546. The Thirty Years’ War brought destruction in 1631, followed by a long rebuilding that lasted until 1689. Today the church combines Gothic, Baroque and modern elements. The 1970 stained-glass windows by Charles Crodel fill the apse with colour, and a Jehmlich organ from 1988 stands on the new gallery. The surviving west tower and Gothic porch open into the nave, where the 1968 vaulting and furnishings by Heinrich Apel can be seen. The church is part of the Romanesque Road and serves as a university church, hosting choral concerts such as the annual Europäische Chornacht.
