Kaštel Gomilica
Kaštel Gomilica is a small settlement on the Dalmatian coast in Croatia, part of the town of Kaštela. It stands beside the sea on a narrow strip of land between the hills and the shore. The place grew around a historic monastery built by Benedictine nuns in the 16th century. The nuns had received the land in 1078 from King Zvonimir of Croatia. They also built a Romanesque church in 1160 dedicated to St Cosmas and Damian. A small island nearby, Kaštilac, once held their monastery. The settlement is worth visiting for its layered history and quiet charm. It served as a filming location for the Free City of Braavos in the HBO series Game of Thrones. The football club NK GOŠK Kaštel Gomilica, originally called Jugovinil, is based here. The area preserves traces of medieval royal gifts and centuries of monastic life. Its modest scale keeps it free from crowds while offering clear views of the Adriatic. Visitors find a peaceful waterfront lined with low stone houses and narrow streets. The church of St Cosmas and Damian still stands in the centre, its Romanesque windows visible. The island of Kaštilac can be reached at low tide by a narrow path. A small harbour offers calm water for swimming and views across to Split. The football club’s ground lies just inland, adding a touch of local life. The whole place feels like a quiet chapter from Dalmatia’s past.
