Ebbw River

The Ebbw River rises near Ebbw Vale in the Welsh valleys and flows south for 25 miles to meet the Severn Estuary below Newport. At Aberbeeg the smaller Ebbw Fach joins the main stream, while upstream the River Tyleri feeds into the Ebbw Fach. Nearby rivers such as the Sirhowy and Rhymney also have names that reverse the usual Welsh pattern. The Sirhowy meets the Ebbw at Crosskeys, then the river passes through Risca and the western suburbs of Newport. It runs beside Tredegar Park before becoming tidal and joining the River Usk seaward of the city. Finally it reaches the Severn Estuary at the river mouth. Walkers can follow the river’s course from its upland source down to the estuary. The valley offers views of old industrial sites and green hillsides. At Crosskeys the meeting of the two rivers is easy to spot. Newport’s western suburbs line the lower banks, where the water widens into a broad tidal channel.
