Schwimmhalle Große Diesdorfer Straße

The Schwimmhalle Große Diesdorfer Straße is a municipal indoor swimming pool in Magdeburg’s Stadtfeld West district. Originally opened in 1958 as an open-air pool beside the Stadion der Bauarbeiter, it was later roofed in 1971 to become a year-round facility. The building now serves both competitive swimming and public use. Dynamo Magdeburg, a club once dominant in East German water polo, once trained here until 1990. Modernisation in 2011 added an accessible entrance and a bio-sauna alongside the main pool. It remains an important centre for regional water sports. The SC Magdeburg and Wasserball-Union Magdeburg both use the eight-lane 50-metre pool for training and competitions. The Wasserball-Union, a former top-flight side, plays many home water-polo matches in front of up to 300 spectators on the poolside gallery. The hall has also hosted international water-polo fixtures, including matches of the German national team. Its continuous use since the 1950s shows how the pool has adapted to changing needs. Visitors find a large main pool with lane markings and a shallow training area. A small grandstand overlooks the water for competitions. The bio-sauna offers a warm retreat after swimming. The entrance area is step-free, making the building accessible. The surrounding neighbourhood is quiet, with the stadium grounds nearby for a short walk. The hall’s functional design reflects its dual role as both a sports venue and a public bath.
