Kurzentrum Ludwigstorff

The Kurzentrum Ludwigstorff stands beside the Danube in Bad Deutsch-Altenburg, a small town in Lower Austria. It is a spa and therapy complex built around a historic mineral spring. The Romans first used the spring in the 1st century and later named the nearby city Carnuntum. After centuries of use, the spa was rebuilt several times, most recently in the 19th century as a modern health centre. The spa is known for its jodine-rich sulphur water, which has the highest iodine content of any Austrian spring. Doctors have prescribed treatments here since the 17th century, when Johann Wilhelm Mannagetta wrote the first medical guide to the waters. In the 20th century the facility expanded with deeper wells and new therapy rooms. Today it treats joint and skin disorders as well as offering wellness programmes. Visitors find a landscaped park with outdoor pools fed by the warm mineral water. Inside, treatment rooms offer physiotherapy, hydrotherapy and thermal baths. The complex includes a historic Kurhaus and a modern wing with pools and relaxation areas. Views stretch across the Danube valley to the Hainburger Mountains. The air carries the faint scent of sulphur from the springs.
