Sandkorn-Theater
The Sandkorn-Theater is a private theatre in Karlsruhe, housed since the early 1980s in a former turbine hall of the city’s utilities. The building, now a protected monument, stands on Kaiserallee and also hosts the Marotte puppet theatre and the Jakobus theatre. Before moving here, the Sandkorn played in a basement in Hagen Street. Its programmes once spanned children’s and youth theatre, classic and contemporary plays, musicals and cabaret, with seven to nine new productions each season. A core company was joined by guest actors, including stars such as Dieter Hildebrandt, Martin Semmelrogge and Katy Karrenbauer. The theatre ran an inclusive project called Die Spinner! with actors with disabilities and a youth club that each year staged a show with up to forty young performers. Today a new company continues the work after the original organisation’s insolvency in 2017. Both stages have been refurbished and now focus on new music theatre and cabaret pieces, alongside regular jazz concerts and poetry slams.
