St. Giles' Catholic Church, Cheadle

St Giles’ Catholic Church stands in the Staffordshire town of Cheadle, a Gothic Revival building designed by Augustus Welby Pugin between 1841 and 1846. The church is Grade I listed and rises to a 61-metre spire, making it the tallest structure for many kilometres around. Every surface inside and out is richly decorated, from painted walls to patterned tile floors. Pugin himself designed almost every fixture, including the font, pulpit, screen and Easter Sepulchre recess. The 16th Earl of Shrewsbury, John Talbot, funded the entire project and ensured Pugin had the resources to realise his vision. The church grew from a small chapel opened in the 1820s by Father William Wareing, who later became Bishop of Northampton. The 15th Earl of Shrewsbury attended Mass there and, after his death, his nephew John Talbot took up the cause of Catholic emancipation. Talbot brought Pugin to Staffordshire in 1837 to work at Alton Towers and soon decided that only Pugin-designed churches would receive his support. St Giles’ was to be far grander than earlier chapels, drawing on medieval precedents from England and abroad. Inside, the church presents a continuous sequence of Gothic forms: a stone-vaulted south porch inspired by Norfolk examples, a painted rood screen based on Castle Acre, and windows whose details came from Antwerp and the Sainte-Chapelle in Paris. Local sandstones and alabaster from Fauld were carved into altars and fittings under Pugin’s close supervision. The layout still reflects medieval liturgical movement, with processional routes through nave and aisles rather than fixed seating. The result is a single, coherent work of art where every stone and colour was chosen to guide worshippers through the drama of the liturgy.
