St Martin's Church, Bole

St Martin’s Church stands in the quiet village of Bole, Nottinghamshire, a 13th-century parish church with Grade II listing. It sits among low East Midlands fields, its stone walls weathered by centuries of wind and rain. The building was restored in 1866 by Ewan Christian, giving it the form seen today. Inside, the roof timbers still carry the marks of medieval craftsmen. The tower rises above the nave, its lines simple and strong against the flat landscape. A small churchyard surrounds the building, its gravestones tilted by time. The church belongs to the Clays Group of seven neighbouring parishes. The church is worth visiting for its historic bells and vanished clock. Three bells hang in a decaying wooden frame, two cast in the 17th century by Henry II Oldfield. The treble bell weighs 4 cwt and dates from 1611, while the tenor is 5.5 cwt and shares the same date. Evidence of a former clock survives in the room beneath the bells, shown in a wartime photograph. The tower once bore a clock face on its south side, now lost. These features link the church to the daily rhythms of earlier villagers. The bells are rung from ground level, a rare arrangement that draws visitors close. Inside, the nave offers plain benches and a central aisle leading to the chancel. The chancel arch frames the communion table, its woodwork plain but dignified. A small organ stands to one side, used for services and occasional recitals. The walls show patches where monuments have been removed or covered over. The tower arch opens to the ringing chamber, where the three bells hang above. From the churchyard gate, views stretch across open fields to distant hedgerows. The building remains a quiet witness to village life across seven centuries.
