Isca Augusta

Isca Augusta stands beneath the modern town of Caerleon in South Wales. The site once housed a Roman legionary fortress and settlement, built for Legion II Augusta after the invasion of 43. The fortress formed one of only three permanent legionary bases in Roman Britain, alongside Chester and York. Its remains lie largely undisturbed beneath fields and buildings, offering rare insight into military life. Archaeologists continue to uncover new structures, including a large complex of monumental buildings found between the River Usk and the amphitheatre. The name Isca refers to the River Usk, while Augusta honours the stationed legion. The fortress served as headquarters for over two centuries, from its foundation in 74 or 75 until at least 300. It contained the usual military buildings: a headquarters, legate’s residence, hospital, bath house, workshops and barrack blocks. The legion consisted of more than five thousand disciplined soldiers who built roads, forts and towns across Britain. The fortress walls were strengthened with stone in 99 or 100, creating a thick composite rampart. Later, under Septimius Severus and Caracalla, the site was refurbished and rebuilt. By the late third century the fortress was mostly empty, though a small caretaker force remained. Visitors today can walk among substantial Roman remains. The amphitheatre, rebuilt three times, once seated six thousand spectators for gladiatorial games. Part of the military bath house survives beneath the modern museum. Prysg Field Barracks are the only visible Roman legionary barracks in Europe. Sections of the fortress wall still stand up to three and a half metres high. The National Roman Legion Museum displays finds from the site, showing how the fortress shaped the region. The town’s medieval chapels recall early Christian martyrs executed in 304. A Roman harbour was discovered in 2011, adding to the layers of history beneath Caerleon.
