Royal Foundation of St Katharine

The Royal Foundation of St Katharine is a historic religious charity in London’s East End. It began in the 12th century as a hospital and church near the Tower of London, founded by Queen Matilda. The original site was lost in the 19th century when St Katharine Docks were built. After the Second World War, the foundation returned to the East End, settling in a former parish church in Ratcliff. The foundation has endured for nearly nine centuries through royal protection and adaptability. It survived religious upheavals, including the Reformation and the Gordon Riots. Queens such as Eleanor of Castile and Philippa of Hainault strengthened its endowment. The precinct once housed a thousand homes, a brewery, and a diverse community of foreigners and workers. Today, the foundation occupies a quiet site in the East End. Visitors find a modern chapel and almshouse buildings set among trees.
