Claig Castle

Claig Castle stands on the small island of Am Fraoch Eilean off the coast of Jura in Argyll and Bute. It was once a powerful sea fortress built by the Lords of the Isles from Clan Donald. The castle controlled shipping routes through the Hebrides for over four centuries. Its remains include the ground floor of a tower house and traces of defensive earthworks. Visitors reach the island by a narrow gully that separates it from the rest of Am Fraoch Eilean. The surviving stonework includes parts of the tower’s walls and defensive banks.
