Burgruine Döffingen

The Burgruine Döffingen stands on a narrow ridge 460 metres above sea level, where the Forchenwald forest meets the Würm and Schwippe valleys. It lies 700 metres west of Döffingen, a village now part of Grafenau in the Böblingen district. The site once belonged to local nobles whose records span from 1272 to 1447. They served the Tübingen counts palatine, suggesting the castle was built in the 13th century. All that remains today is a heap of rubble. The name Buschelberg on local maps still points to the vanished stronghold. In Swabian dialect, Buschel means a small ruined castle, confirming the site’s former purpose. Archaeologists have not found standing walls or towers, only scattered stones. The location offers sweeping views over the surrounding valleys and forests. Walkers can reach the spot along quiet woodland paths from Döffingen. Visitors find a quiet clearing among tall pines and beeches. A low mound marks where the keep once stood. Information boards explain the site’s history without cluttering the view. The air carries the scent of resin and damp earth. From the ridge, the Würm valley stretches away to the east and the Schwippe valley to the west.
