Church of St Mary and St Peter, Winford

The Church of St Mary and St Peter stands in the village of Winford, Somerset. Built in the 15th century, it is an Anglican church with a Grade II* listing. The main body was rebuilt in 1796, but the tower, dating from about 1437, remains from the original structure. The church includes a nave, chancel, north and south aisles, and a four-stage west tower. The tower is supported by set-back buttresses and features a small polygonal stair turret rising from the roof. The tower holds eight bells, six of which were re-tuned and two added in 2006. Its parapet is decorated with trefoil-headed arches, crocketted pinnacles, and corner gargoyles. Inside, visitors find a font and a wooden pulpit. Stained glass with heraldic shields and a canvas coat of arms beneath the tower add to the interior’s character. Outside, an unidentified monument and a Shire Monument from around 1764 stand in the churchyard. The church belongs to the benefice of Winford with Felton Common in the Diocese of Bath and Wells. Its historic tower and well-preserved interior make it a notable landmark in the Somerset countryside. The combination of medieval and later features offers a quiet place for reflection and observation. The village setting adds to the church’s peaceful atmosphere.
