Schloss
Schloss Maxhofen stands in the village of Maxhofen, part of Bruckmühl in the Rosenheim district of Bavaria. The three-winged complex covers about two hectares and began as a small 16th-century castle called Einhofen. In 1683 Graf Maximilian von Preising renamed it Maxhofen, added the chapel and side buildings, and secured the right to hold manorial courts. Later owners included Minister Josef Ferdinand, the Tattenbach and Arco families, and finally the Landesversicherungsanstalt Oberbayern, which turned it into a home for the elderly in 1903. Since 1960 the City of Munich has run it as a school camp. The main block is a two-storey structure under a hipped roof with a central portico and pediment on the garden side. The north and south wings are single-storey mansard-roof pavilions linked to the main building by arched gateways. Together they enclose a formal forecourt laid out in the late 18th century and planted as a symmetrical garden that descends in terraces. Beyond the forecourt a landscaped park contains a decorative fountain, a pond fed by a stream, and a small cascade. Visitors walk past the protected main building and wings into the forecourt, where gravel paths lead between clipped lawns and herbaceous borders. The garden’s central axis drops through stone balustrades and broad steps to the park, where a gravel walk circles the pond. Two service courts hold former stables and modern sports pitches for camping groups. The whole estate remains quiet, shaded by mature trees and framed by distant Alpine foothills.
