Plainmoor

Plainmoor is a football stadium in the Plainmoor suburb of Torquay, Devon. It has been the home of Torquay United Football Club since 1921. The club now plays in the National League South, the sixth tier of English football. Truro City also used the ground for some home games in the 2018–19 season. Before Torquay United, the ground belonged to Torquay Athletic Rugby Football Club. In 1910, Torquay Town and Babbacombe merged to form the current club. The stadium has seen many changes over the years. A wooden grandstand from Buckfastleigh Racecourse was moved here in 1927. In 1954–55, over 21,000 fans watched a match against Huddersfield Town. A fire in 1985 destroyed part of the old grandstand. Later, new stands were built, including the Family Stand and the Sparkworld Stand. The main stand was replaced in 2012 and named Bristow’s Bench after a former director. Visitors find a modern stadium with seated areas and a club shop. The Boots and Laces pub and restaurant sits in the Family Stand. The Sparkworld Stand holds away fans, and a TV gantry overlooks the pitch. A big screen was added between the popular side and the away end. The ground still hosts Torquay United’s matches in the National League South.
