Dad's Army Museum

The Dad’s Army Museum sits behind Thetford Guildhall in a converted 19th-century fire station. The town itself lies in Norfolk, where many outdoor scenes for the BBC comedy were filmed. The Guildhall once stood in for Walmington-on-Sea Town Hall in several episodes. Volunteers run the museum and regularly take Jones’ Van to 1940s events across East Anglia. The museum opened in December 2007 with help from David Croft, one of the show’s writers. Inside, a full reconstruction of Captain Mainwaring’s church-hall office greets visitors. Display cases hold uniforms, photographs and props from the series. Lance-Corporal Jones’s red dress uniform with medals is among the items shown. Visitors also find a small shop and the Marigold Tea Room. A restored Ford BB van used as Jones’ butcher’s van is on show nearby at the Charles Burrell Museum. The building and its exhibits bring the Home Guard comedy to life for fans of all ages.
