Ebenezer Chapel, Melksham

The Ebenezer Strict Baptist Chapel stands on Union Street in the Wiltshire village of Melksham. Built in 1835, the small chapel has a Welsh slate roof and sits slightly back from the road. A memorial stone in the wall marks the year of construction. The chapel’s entrance is framed by two stone pillars beside the central door. The Strict Baptist congregation was founded in 1821 and still meets regularly. The chapel was listed Grade II by English Heritage in 1985 for its special historic interest. Its nationally important status reflects the building’s simple but well-preserved design. Around forty members belong to the congregation today. Services are held on Sunday mornings and evenings, with an additional meeting on Tuesday nights. The chapel’s quiet presence contrasts with the everyday life of Union Street. Inside, the chapel is plain and unadorned, with a central aisle leading to the pulpit. Plain glass windows allow daylight to fill the space. The walls are painted white, and the wooden pews face the front. The memorial stone from 1835 remains visible near the entrance. Outside, the chapel’s modest exterior gives little hint of its long history in the community.
