Portland Bill

Portland Bill is a narrow promontory at the southern tip of the Isle of Portland in Dorset. It marks the southernmost point of the county and juts into the English Channel. The area is known for its treacherous waters, where shallow reefs and the Shambles sandbank create dangerous tidal races. Three lighthouses have stood here over the centuries to guide ships past these hazards. The current lighthouse, built in 1906, replaced an earlier pair that had operated since 1716. Beacon fires were lit as early as Roman times to warn sailors of the perilous coastline. The site has deep historical significance in maritime safety. Trinity House opposed the first lighthouse but later granted a patent in 1716. The two original lighthouses were poorly maintained and rebuilt several times before being decommissioned in the early 20th century. The Old Lower Lighthouse became a bird observatory in 1961, while the Old Higher Lighthouse is now a holiday let. Pulpit Rock, an artificial stack formed by quarrying in the 1870s, adds to the dramatic scenery. The area also includes a coastguard lookout rebuilt by the National Coastwatch Institution in the 21st century. Visitors find a striking landscape shaped by history and nature. The current lighthouse has a visitor centre and offers tours to its summit for panoramic views. Nearby stands the Trinity House Obelisk, erected in 1844 as a daymark. Red Crane, a fishing crane on the cliff edge, overlooks the water, while beach huts dot the surroundings. The nearby Culverwell Mesolithic Site reveals ancient human activity dating back 7,500 to 8,500 years. Ancient strip fields from Anglo-Saxon times stretch between the Bill and Southwell, adding to the area’s archaeological interest.
