Museum Bad Schwartau

The Museum of the Town of Bad Schwartau stands in the small town of Bad Schwartau in Kreis Ostholstein, Schleswig-Holstein. It opened in 1989 in the former spa house on Schillerstraße. The collection contains many art and cultural history objects that tell the story of the town. Special exhibitions once complemented the permanent displays. In spring 2018 the museum closed temporarily for the public. A plan approved by the town council in July 2025 will move it to the former district court on the town’s market square. The museum’s holdings include a wide range of items from Bad Schwartau’s past. A 1993 exhibition guide by Manfred Bannow-Lindtke covers the years 1929 to 1945. Recent projects have digitised old postcards and preserved valuable photographs. Staff have also worked to conserve early 20th-century images of the town. These efforts show how the collection keeps growing and changing. Visitors will find a new setting in the former district court building on the market square. The town calls this space a ‘third place’ for culture and learning. Inside, displays will still focus on the history of Bad Schwartau. The move aims to make the museum more central and easier to reach. Outside, the market square offers a quiet place to pause after a visit.
