Blackwood Miners Welfare Institute

The Blackwood Miners Welfare Institute stands at the north end of Blackwood High Street in Caerphilly, Wales. It began in 1925 as a single-floor snooker hall funded by miners and the Miners Welfare Fund. Two extra floors were added in 1936, creating space for a stage, auditorium, dance floor, library and rehearsal rooms. The building fell into disrepair during the 1970s and 1980s as pits closed and contributions dwindled. It was sold to Islwyn Borough Council in 1989 and reopened in 1992 as an arts venue run by Caerphilly County Borough Council. The institute is a Grade II* listed building and a key social-historical site in South Wales. It has hosted early performances by the Manic Street Preachers, formed locally in 1986. The hall co-produces shows with Black Rat Theatre Company that tour across Wales. A collection of its committee minutes and accounts from 1927 to 1945 is held at Swansea University archives. In 2024, the council proposed closing the venue as a cost-saving measure, prompting a petition that gathered over 1,000 signatures in a day. Inside, the institute has the Memorial Theatre with space for up to 30 musicians and a flat-floored auditorium with a curved barrel roof. The stone facade features three symmetrical bays and stepped parapets on the outer sections. The interior retains little decoration but shows strong architectural character. Restoration work in 2011–2012 updated both the interior and exterior. The building closed briefly during the COVID-19 pandemic and reopened in September 2021.
