St Athernase Church, Leuchars
St Athernase Church stands in the small village of Leuchars in Fife, Scotland. It is a Romanesque building with parts dating from the 12th century. The chancel and half-round apse show typical Norman blind arcades. A belfry was added around 1700, and the nave was restored in 1858. The church remains in use as a Church of Scotland parish church. It is a Category A listed building. The church holds relics of historical interest inside. Part of a 9th-century cross-slab was found near the village. Three 16th-century memorial stones belong to the Bruces of Earlshall, local lairds. One stone shows a full-length figure of a woman, documenting contemporary dress. The dedication to St Athernase is a 19th-century mistake from a medieval manuscript. Visitors find a quiet, ancient church with simple stonework. The Norman arches and chancel remain largely unchanged. The interior holds early Christian carvings and memorials. The surrounding village of Leuchars adds to the peaceful setting. The church’s real patron may have been St Bonoc, linked to a lost local cult.
